Robert Eugene Smith was born in 1927 in St. Louis, Missouri. Smith was discharged from the army in 1948 due to a heart condition and was unable to work. Soon after, he had a nervous breakdown and was institutionalized for the next sixteen years where he began creating art. Smith is included in "Flying Free Twentieth-Century Self-Taught Art from the Collection of Ellin and Baron Gordon" and "Rosenak’s Encyclopedia of American Folk Art and Artists".
