
Willie
Massey (1906
- 1990)
| Born
in Salem, Kentucky, Massey worked for nearly seventy years
on a local farm for the same family, who eventually deeded
him his house in gratitude for his services. He began creating
sculptures and paintings after his wife died in 1955. Willie
created many different art forms and images using found objects
and materials, he refered to his art as "Tricks".
He assembled colorful birdhouses and miniture furniture made
from old boards and wingless birds and made from aluminum
foil, painted with enamel. Willie. a large man used a hand-crafted
walking stick as his arthritis progressed. He died in 1990
as a result of burns suffered in a fire in his home. His work
is included in many permanent collections, including the Kentucky
Folk Art Center, the Morris Museum of Art and the Birmingham
Museum of Art. |
